“As I lay on the mattress, and the blue cloak with a sun covered me, I felt I could be well….that it was okay to be here. Jesus said, Get up you are well, and while Farhi didn’t exactly say that, he guided me like a tin can up in space down through the exploded debris, into the high atmosphere. "It is a unique experience to make music with Farhi! Our pupils at the Royal Blind School, Canaan Lane campus have MDVI (multiple disabilities with visual impairment) and are often exceptionally sensitive to sound and music. They were already familiar with Farhi’s extraordinary voice through listening to his musical contribution to a Native American sensory story written specifically for them. However, it was a different experience altogether when he came to perform live at the school....
Many pupils, as wheelchair users, were lying out on soft mats for extra comfort whilst others with some mobility were unrestrained and able to move freely around the room. Carefully gauging the atmosphere, Farhi began to sing - immediately the pupils became alert and responsive, stilling , smiling or turning their heads towards the sound. His voice, often accompanied by rhythmic beating on a Shamanic drum had the warmth, intensity and power to draw listeners into his own special reality of music and healing. In a mixture of songs, chants and hypnotic drumming, he led us on a musical journey responding with acute sensitivity to the ever shifting dynamics of the human and physical environment. Pupils and staff were encouraged to become active participants, singing and drumming in a liberating musical interaction which left us all energised and suffused with feelings of well-being.
